A fellow-prince among the kings, a sovereign by
the right Of honest manhood, bred beneath high Liberty's
clear light.
Where the altars of the Druids and ancient ab­beys lie,
'Neath forest-covered ruins, marking centuries gone by,
And in places that are cobwebbed with history as old
As Britain's first traditions, lying deep in must and mold,
There the chieftain and his riders went, and held their hardy games

By the Tiber, 'neath the shadow of St. Peter's
lofty dome, The mighty pile that canopies the hierarch of
Rome; 'Mid monuments and masonry, that, crumbling
in decay, Teach the vanity of empire, how weak and fleet
its sway, Here rode the knightly plainsman, and his cabal-
leros sang
